We didn’t need to rush to get up this morning except that breakfast was included with the hotel, so we had to be down in the restaurant before 10am. We had an Alton breakfast (named after the hotel), consisting of sausage, scrambled egg, fried potatoes, toast and fruit.

Afterwards, we finished packing and then went down to reception with our bags to get them stored until later on that day.

Unfortunately we found out that our return flight was delayed by roughly three hours, due to the late departure of the outbound flight. This made things a little awkward with what to do for some of the day. Also this meant that we would be travelling later home once landed, which we’d hoped to avoid.

Anyway, to make the most of the California sunshine, we walked along the promenade towards the Golden Gate Bridge. We got to Fort Mason National Recreation Area (originally an army post) and saw some great views of the bridge (it was three miles away from where we stood). We also saw Frisco Bay from the hill above. On the way back, we stopped at a market that sold freshly caught crabs and lobster. I felt a bit sorry for them awaiting their fate. This was our last opportunity to take some snaps before heading back to the hotel.

Even with the later departure time of 2225, we had been advised by British Airways that we still had to be at SFO for the original time (1925), meaning that we had a long time to spend at the airport. Once we’d collected our bags and the hire car, we were on our way. We left San Francisco at about 1430. I had to negotiate some tricky hills again in the city, mostly driving behind one of the famous cable cars. I found it quite stressful having to hang back at the top of some steep hills. Back on 101 South, heading for the airport, traffic was heavy and it took a while to get going. However, it was easy finding the rental car return place at the airport, some thirty minutes later. Once we’d dropped the car off we caught the train to the airport. All of this was relatively straightforward.

Security was not quite as straightforward, as I got stuck behind a Chinese guy who was been given the full treatment for being security searched. He had something metal which they couldn’t find. The security officer said that I couldn’t move through until he’d been cleared, only for me to then have to have a full body frisking before I could get through!! Note to self, don’t wear a long skirt when travelling….

So, we are sat in the BA lounge at SFO with a wait time of five hours from now, if we leave at the new scheduled time. Fingers crossed that some of the time is made up for the delayed flight in to SFO.

Whatever happens, see you at the other side of the pond.
