If I’d said that today wasn’t eventful I don’t know what is. It certainly didn’t turn out how we expected it to be….

We woke fairly early and headed down to the farmers market on Brockway Road which was about ten minutes walk from our hotel. This market is held every Tuesday and gives local farmers the opportunity to sell their home grown produce. There were lots of colourful fruit and vegetables for sale. It was lovely to see something so well supported but everything was so expensive.

We went back to the hotel and checked out and headed for Reno. This was a 32 mile journey through the stunning Tahoe National Forest.

It was a straightforward enough journey and although there were roadworks outside the hotel we were booked into at Reno, we managed to get an early check in. The hotel was looking a bit tired, but the room was clean.

Once we’d dumped our bags we headed out to see what Reno was all about. We passed a few casinos and headed towards the river but we just kept getting lots of hassle and threats from homeless people and others who were behaving very oddly. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve been used to it in both San Francisco and San Diego, but I’ve never been bothered like we were bothered today. We had a quick lunch at Wild River Grill and then headed back to the hotel, experiencing more hassle, so much so that we both felt really, really unsafe. JC said that we shouldn’t feel like this on holiday and said that we could check out and go elsewhere. We found a last minute booking at Tahoe City and checked out. The hotel receptionist totally empathised with us and said he wouldn’t bill us for the room, so we’d just have to ask Booking.com for a refund.

So back on the I-80 towards Tahoe City we just felt such a sense of relief. Tahoe City is in North Lake Tahoe and it didn’t take that long to get there. We arrived at our newly booked hotel and felt safe.

The guy who checked us into our hotel was great and made us feel very welcome. By this time it was past 2pm so we headed along North Lake Boulevard. We soon came to a bar/restaurant and found a spot outside with the most stunning views of Lake Tahoe. It was absolutely beautiful and a total contrast to what we had just left. It totally blew me away. We relaxed in the afternoon sunshine whilst having a drink there. We then moved in to a balcony area with more stunning views and we had pizza and chicken wings to eat.

We settled the bill and then walked further along North Lake Boulevard. We popped into a local winery called Uncorked. The wine was expensive but we decided to stay for a glass whilst we sorted out our stay for tomorrow, as we could only get availability in Tahoe City for one night. It was a relief when we got that done!!

Back at our hotel we had a sour pineapple and guava beer in the bar area at the back of the hotel. The bartender was lovely and even though happy hour had just finished, she only charged us for one drink, just over $8. We made the right choice leaving Reno.

Reno doesn’t sound very good. I’ve experienced homeless people in San Francisco and on the California coast at Santa Monica but never felt threatened by it. You made a good decision to go to Lake Tahoe; fresh air and lovely scenery.

It was just awful. The place was deserted apart from them. We’ve also met some amazing people on our journey across CA too. Some have said that not enough is being done about the homeless situation here. It’s just getting worse.

Yes. Someone said to me that the homeless go out west because it’s warmer, especially in winter. They’d rather be homeless out west than be homeless in NYC.
