Miami, FL, Day 8, 020324, and a run for home 030324

020324

I really didn’t want to get up on Saturday morning. My body was tired of huge food portions as well as American wine and cocktails. However, a check of the weather back home meant that we needed to make the most of our last hours in the US.

We packed up our belongings into our backpacks and went down to reception to check out. The staff at the Betsy have been really brilliant, every single one of them. So when Fritzner, the receptionist, asked if we’d do a google review, I said I would. We left the luggage at the hotel and went out.

We went for breakfast to Il Bolognese. It’s not far from the hotel so nice and handy. I’m “trying” to be healthy so I had avocado toast again. It came with scrambled eggs though, so there was too much for me. However what I ate needed to keep me going until we got on the flight later on.

The temperature was 27 Celsius at 11:00am, but we wanted to have a walk to the other end of Ocean Drive and back. We passed the Palace which was absolutely heaving at 11:00am. The latest drag queen was dressed head to foot in a pink woolly dress. They must have been boiling hot. It was very entertaining as usual. I wonder how many dollars they got today?

JC made a bit of a bad move by wearing all black, so he was sweating by the time we got back, about an hour and a half later.

He was relieved to get into the air conditioned hotel lobby where we just sat and chilled out. We listened to a piano player who is, according to the hotel concierge, a Grammy award winning pianist. He actually sounded like he was playing in the style of Les Dawson, the music seemed a bit random and out of tune….

The hotel concierge asked us if we needed any help with anything as he’d noticed we had been sitting for a while. We explained that we were waiting to get a taxi to Miami International Airport soon. He offered us a glass of champagne and brought it over to us. He said to make the most of it before we head back to rainy England. He also gave us some Betsy Hotel chocolates to take back home.

Our Uber this time was a Tesla, driven by a young lady called Tanzania. So, we travelled to the airport in luxury.

Getting through airport security was straightforward enough, although I did get stopped. The metal button on my jeans shorts had triggered an alarm so I had to be frisked by an officious young woman.

Once security was completed we went to the Flagship lounge for a bit of peace and quiet away from the noisy concourse.

The flight left on time but I couldn’t sleep very well. A woman opposite me had her tv screen switched on. She was away with the fairies so I had to ask one of the aircrew to switch it off.

We are now back on the other side of the pond. We landed later than scheduled at 7:00am. Our original train ticket was booked at 11:27am, to allow for delays etc. It was going to be really tight to get across from Heathrow to Kings Cross to pick up the 8:25am Hull Train instead. We boarded the Heathrow Express after clearing customs, at about 7:15. We then realised we’d picked up the train on the Elizabethan Line instead of the one that goes directly to KGX. We got our apps open to find the most direct route to Kings Cross. As the Heathrow Express terminated at Paddington, we had to run to the Underground Circle Line and pick up a tube there. We got on the tube train at 8:03am. If the timetable was correct it should take nine minutes to get to Kings Cross. Would we make it? Thankfully Sunday morning was relatively quiet in the underground so we ran like the clappers when we got off the Circle Line at KGX and got there with five minutes to spare! It cost £25 to change our tickets but it was well worth it to not have to wait another three hours in London. We made it and are now enjoying a cup of Yorkshire Tea on the train.
