Friday was our last full day in Valencia and also the hottest. By midday it was nudging 30 degrees so we made sure we had plenty of sun cream on.
First we did a bit of bimbling around the main shops of the Colón area. There are some pretty decent retail outlets here which sell different clothes compared to what we can buy back at home in the UK. There are also some designer shops but we didn’t bother venturing anywhere near them.
Once JC had bought some trainers we headed back to the apartment to drop them off before heading out to lunch.

Again it was a late lunch so we decided to eat at Haus, which is literally outside the front doors of Mon Suites Benlliure. The Argentinian waiter, who had served us the day before, was very chatty again. He is determined to improve his English. He was very pleasant and told us about being offered a job by a couple from London at their Brazilian restaurant. He wasn’t sure what to do but we did say it would be a good way to improve his English!

Once our late lunch was finished we headed into the historical district at the Plaça de la Reina. We found a bar, Taberna Vintara, which has great views of the Valencia cathedral. Across from the bar were the market traders who weren’t very busy. In fact, I manage to snap a couple of traders who were having an afternoon siesta. It was probably the heat which was making them sleepy!
My not so sleepy self spotted a tall model of the Virgin Mary heading towards the cathedral. This reminded me of what I’d seen last year during the Semana Santa in Sevilla. It stopped outside and was lifted off its carriage before being walked into the cathedral by some twenty or so men in white shirts. It was then followed by worshippers before disappearing from sight. I heard someone say that it may be a recognition of the Immaculate Conception but I haven’t been able to find anything on the internet about it. I wondered if it was linked to some religious festival as we’d seen other similar effigies earlier on in the week.

We went back to the apartment to escape the heat of the late afternoon sun. When I woke from my siesta, we got ready and headed out. Again, no plan of where to eat but we suddenly realised that it was Friday, and how busy it was with Spaniards and visitors! However, we managed to get the last table (again) at Bardebares, our favourite tapas restaurant of the trip. We had some beautiful food again, served by our cheeky and lovely waitress. We had a brandy to finish off the meal before trying out another bar close by, the Pintxo i Trago. The Rioja was a bit brutal so we soon left before heading off back to the apartment.
Today, Saturday 3rd June, we got up early and headed to the nearby taxi rank, on Carrer de Sant Vicente Martín, for a quick 15 minute transfer to the airport. We are currently sitting in the airport lounge waiting for our 11:25 flight back to London.
