Unfortunately the weather forecast for today was spot on. So, I thought today’s instalment would be very brief, with nothing to write about. It was grey, miserable, cool and pouring down with rain. Even the cleaner blasting out Sade on her stereo couldn’t make things any better!! Not to be phased by the weather, we went for a wander in true British style.
The cloud was so low that we could hardly see the mountains that surround South Lake Tahoe. Walking down Lake Tahoe Boulevard we realised that there is not a lot of indoor activity here, it’s all geared up for the great outdoors. We nipped in and out of shops looking for a hoodie to buy to keep warm but I didn’t really see anything that took my fancy. Besides, I wouldn’t have needed it all day as the weather did improve later on.
At midday, we went to Stateline Brewery for lunch and a couple of cheeky drinks. The place was heaving and the one bartender running the whole bar did a brilliant job. I had fish tacos which were quite spicy but hit the spot.
Thankfully, when we left, the rain had stopped. This was great as it wasn’t what the forecast had predicted- it was supposed to rain most of the day. It still remained a little cooler but we kept moving to stay warm. The cloud surrounding the mountains had almost disappeared. We headed into the Nevada side of South Lake Tahoe to see if we had missed anything, as all of our time has been spent in the Californian area so far.
We actually hadn’t missed anything. It’s amazing the actual contrast of what goes on in Nevada compared to California. Nevada is all about casinos. Nothing else, just casinos. Oh, and a really great burger place that I shall come on to later. And a CVS Pharmacy, tattooist and vape shop. That’s about it.
Not being into gambling at all, the Nevada side is a huge disappointment. We saw people coming out of the casinos, looking as if they’d been there all night, their eyes not used to the brightness outside! Just to be nosey, we walked through the Hard Rock Casino. It stank because you are allowed to smoke in there. We heard cheers from the crap table so somebody had got lucky. Other people were sat playing roulette and other slot machine type games.
Not being able to bear the smell of stale smoke, we didn’t hang around. We headed back into California and to our favourite watering hole, South of North Brewing Co. There was a band playing which is always a good reason to stay. They were playing classic songs performed by the likes of Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and other blues style bands. It’s one of my favourite things, listening to live music. Even better doing this in California.

When the band stopped, we could hear a sound check going on by the band Train, who were playing at an event organised by Harvey’s Casino on the other side of the stateline. There were still plenty of tickets available but we decided to give it a miss.

Time passed by pretty quickly with us having a leisurely afternoon. It was just so chilled listening to the band with a couple of drinks. The sun had also tried to come out so it was great being outside. All good things come to an end as we needed to eat, so we headed back to the hotel to get changed. We didn’t have anything booked for our tea, but knew that we had to go to Lucky Beaver Bar and Burger. It has a star rating of 4.6 out of 5 on Google so we thought it must be decent. In fact, it was the only decent place we visited in Nevada!! There was a bit of a queue when we got there and probably had to wait for 40 minutes before we got a table. The guys in front of us in the queue more or less said it would be worth the wait.
It was hardly surprising that we had to wait so long as it was very busy. We were attended to by a young waitress who was lovely. We ordered a cocktail – I had a Bent Beaver. This consisted of Bentley Heritage Juniper Grove Gin, cucumber, lime juice, simple syrup and Saint Germain Elderflower Liqueur. It was fabulous. I ordered a Platinum burger from the menu which was a half pound burger in a bun with American cheese, Thousand Island dressing and caramelised onions. This came with a choice of fries, so I had garlic Parmesan fries. It was one of the best burger meals I’ve ever eaten. No wonder it has been voted “Best Burger 8 Years Running” by readers of the Best of Tahoe Tribune. Being in Nevada, you could also do a bit of gambling at the bar, but we didn’t partake. We did see, though, that over $1 million was paid out in July alone. If you click on the link to the Lucky Burger website below, then find the “About Us” section, it tells the story of the Pat Lafrieda Family. They own the business and you can learn the history of how they came to the US from Italy. It’s really interesting.
We left just as it was getting dark so headed to the beach at Lakeside Park to see the sun going down over Lake Tahoe. This was the perfect end to our stay in South Lake Tahoe.
