We left Basecamp at Tahoe City early this morning and arrived at our next stop, Truckee, at 10am. This obviously wasn’t our original plan as this would have been day 2 of staying in Reno….
Cedar House Sports Hotel is the loveliest hotel that we have stayed in whilst on our journey through California. Although this room was cheaper than our first visit, it was a definite upgrade from our last stay. We even managed to get checked in early which was another bonus.

We asked if we could hire a couple of the hotel bikes so we could explore a bit more around the Truckee River, along the Legacy Trail. It was simple to set up, we just signed a waiver and collected the bikes and helmets. The receptionist warned us about cycling at the elevation of Truckee (it’s 6000 ft here) and this makes the UV stronger. He advised about taking it steady and drinking plenty of water, which we did.
We cycled just less than 6 miles altogether, most of it on the Truckee Legacy Trail. This has great views of the Truckee River and some of High Sierra. Most of the trail is unshaded so we had plenty of water stops. The smell of pine was divine as we cycled along the smooth pavement. We saw a beautiful blue jay too, but it moved too fast to take a decent photo.

When we’d done about 2.5 miles we turned back to head for the main road that took us into Truckee. There is a cycle path so it made the ride easy, plus it was all downhill!!
We stopped at the 1882 Bar and Grill for lunch. The bartender was lovely and recommended somewhere for us to go hiking but it was just too hot in the midday sun. Once we’d eaten we cycled back up the hill towards Cedar House Sports Hotel. We left the bikes locked in the store, changed into our swimwear and went for a soak in the hot tub. The water was very hot so didn’t exactly cool us down, but the jets eased our achey muscles from cycling up the steep hill from Truckee.

Showered and dressed, we headed for the outside bar. It is shaded by lots of lovely plants and trees and was the perfect end to our bike trail.
Later on, for tea, we were booked into the hotel restaurant, called Stella. We were shown to our table straightaway and given our menus and chilled water. To begin, we decided to share something for the table, so we went for zaaloub, a Moroccan eggplant dip with olive oil, herbs and pita bread. We were given time to choose mains at this point but the waiter should have been a bit more informed with what was and wasn’t available, as some first choices were sold out. Still, we went for sous-vide seared steak which was perfectly cooked. It was served with asparagus, morel mushrooms, potatoes and mole negro. The icing on the cake was our dessert which we shared. This was a baklava sundae, an amazing combination of vanilla ice cream, filo pistachio baklava, honey syrup and bing cherry. Absolutely delicious and a great end to our time in Truckee.
