So we have hit double figures with the number of days we’ve been away…six more days left and then home. I don’t want to think about it yet though, so enough for now.

We had breakfast in the Lake Natoma Hotel. In Folsom. It was nice until a woman came up to chat to me, and then I heard her say that she thinks she may have covid because she felt so unwell. It was a matter of seconds that she was close by but I think she should have known better….

So we got on the road and headed for Truckee. It was a pretty uneventful 70-75 miles until we reached Tahoe National Forest. At an elevation of some 7000 feet we saw some beautiful sights and some burnt out areas from the forest fires of 2021.

Descending from the highest point of the I-80, we reached a vista point of the Donner Lake area which was absolutely incredible. Driving towards the lower part of the interstate the satnav redirected us away from the roadworks on a detour past the shores of Donner Lake which was a great move. We managed to park up for a few minutes to capture some lovely photos of the lake.

We arrived in Truckee shortly after and benefited from an early check in at the Cedar House Sport Hotel. This is situated about a 20 minute walk out of Truckee in a beautiful setting of pine trees with views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the distance. The receptionist was really helpful about places to go. She even offered us a home baked cookie which was divine. After dropping our bags in our room we headed into Truckee wandering down the path of the Old Brockway Road and across the Truckee River and railway crossing. It is a busy place with lots of visitors. In the winter people use this as a base for skiing at nearby resorts.

Our first stop was for lunch at a place recommended by the hotel receptionist, called Moody’s Bistro, Bar and Beats. The waiter, Garret, really looked as if he didn’t want to be there, it was obviously why the restaurant was so called ha ha!! We ended up with sandwiches which were enormous so we ended up leaving some of it.

Once we had paid we wandered down Donner Pass Road which is a road that runs parallel to the Southern Pacific Railroad, that was built in 1900. The road was busy with people milling around in and out of shops and bars. We saw some trains passing through that were run by Amtrak and Union Pacific.

We didn’t find anywhere of interest so headed back down towards Bar of America, on the corner of Donner Pass and Bridge Street. This was another typical American bar/restaurant with friendly staff. We only wanted a drink so went to sit at the bar. The IPA that I ordered was far too strong for me so I ended up with a nice glass of Whispering Angel rose wine instead.

We didn’t want a huge heavy meal for tea so we ordered take out Caesar/house salads (!) from there for our supper and took these back to the hotel. Back there, we went to the bar and ordered a lovely bottle of wine from Sonoma County. We drank some of it in the bar/reception area then changed into swimwear to try out the hot tub. It was lovely and relaxing before we headed back to the room for the rest of our wine and supper. In the background we could hear the horns of the trains whilst listening to some 80s music on the tv. An end to another brilliant day.
