Despite the media hype, the worry of British Airways cancelling flights, losing baggage and threats of strikes, our journey to SFO airport was nothing short of perfect. The plan was to travel light, without having to worry about hold luggage being held up, or lost, so we had bought Osprey backpacks that satisfy the cabin bag requirements. On top of that BA also allow a handbag or laptop bag, so all sorted. The flight did leave about 45 minutes late due to the hold door not being able to close (or was baggage delayed, who knows?).
A special treat (and flight sale) meant that we could fly in Club World. Having our own pod, and fantastic service from air steward Matthew, made a long journey so much more pleasurable. The seat converted to a bed so gave us time to relax and sleep, as well as take advantage of the fabulous in-flight service.
We landed in San Francisco mid afternoon. Passport control was very busy so there was a bit of a hold up before being interrogated by America’s finest border control officer.
After a short wait at the terminal for our taxi pickup we we driven into downtown SF. It was very busy with traffic on this Californian Saturday afternoon but we just chilled while the taxi driver took us to Marriott Vacation Club Pulse Hotel in Jones Street. This hotel is close to all the main tourist areas including Fisherman’s Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, access to Alcatraz and more. For more information go to
Once we’d checked in and been given our complimentary tote bag, we headed off towards Fisherman’s Wharf, which was busy with late afternoon visitors. The weather was typical of San Francisco, about 19 degrees and a cool wind. We always say it’s like Whitby, only in that the weather is similar as well as having the availability of local fish in the restaurants.
We took a short stroll away from the main hustle and bustle and found a fish restaurant called Capurro’s. We only needed a small dish to keep us going so ordered fish tacos which were delivered in minutes. You can see the menu here:
Once food was out of the way, we headed to Ghirardelli Square to see if one of our favourite spots, Wattle Creek Winery, was open. Unfortunately it has been replaced by a chocolate shop so we carried on to find somewhere to drink. Further down we found the San Francisco Brewing Company. We were offered a seat at the bar where we chose a flight of their own beers that are brewed on site https://www.sfbrewingco.com . There was a great atmosphere and we even got talking to a local couple who told us about some lesser known places that we should visit. Hopefully we will have time to do some of it.
It was becoming apparent that being up for 22 hours was now taking its toll, with a little help from SF Brewing Company beer!! It was then we thought we’d try and get used to being eight hours behind UK time and head back to the hotel, and to bed! Sadly my body clock hasn’t adjusted as I’m writing this at 3:30am…..
