The day started with the worry of whether the flight from London Heathrow would actually leave. The media had reported 64 BA flights being cancelled over the weekend, and also chaos at airport check-in and security. However, going through security was seamless with hardly anyone being there. Despite a slight delay, the flight went well and we arrived in Sevilla more or less at our original time.
The taxi transfer had been prearranged so getting from Sevilla airport was easy and took about 25 minutes. Check-in at the Hotel Doña Maria was also smooth. The views of the city from the room are wonderful and I will write about in more detail at a later date.
Sevilla was very busy. The Easter religious festival “Semana Santa” (Holy Week) attracts many Spaniards and foreign tourists so people were milling about everywhere. I shall look forward to some of the parades that will take place this week. We saw many locals wearing full length religious gowns, some black and some white. This was worn with a long pointed cone shaped headdress. The idea of wearing the headdress goes back to the 17th century when worshippers believed that it brought the wearer closer to God.
La Azotea restaurant was a typical Spanish fish restaurant which I’d researched before leaving the UK. The spicy blue fin tuna (tartare) tacos were wonderful as a starter. The pil pil style cod cheeks for my main were not such a good choice but did not spoil the overall experience. Local white wine was served as a recommendation from the waitress and did not fail to please.
Walking back to the hotel was leisurely and we paid visits to some local bars including Amalgama Cafe Copas and La Jugueteria. Asking for vino tinto resulted in beautiful, yet cheap, Spanish red wine. €6 for two 250ml glasses seemed to be the standard rate wherever we went.
Back at the hotel, we had a nightcap before the bar closed at midnight.
